World Refugee Day (WRD) provides an opportunity for the New Zealand public to come together to commemorate the strength, courage, and perseverance of those who were once displaced. It also provides an opportunity for New Zealanders to stand in solidarity with millions of refugees around the world. It is a historical event which is held on the 20th of June every year. WRD also marks a key moment for the public to understand the past, and present to show support for families, communities and especially indigenous who were forced to flee their homeland.
We were delighted to be co-hosting this year’s commemoration of WRD with the Auckland Art Gallery. The theme for 2019 is “Remind the world we are all human.”
Many joined us on World Refugee Day as we reflected on the resettlement journey to Aotearoa while celebrating the voices, investments and achievements of these communities in New Zealand. Celebrations started with cultural presentations, Ministerial speeches and concluded with an ARCC youth-led panel.
